Week 6: The Preparation for Competition Continues 2.0

Next on the agenda was the research behind our design. We knew at that point we would be doing a parasitic pavilion in an urban setting, with kerfing as our chosen method of applied technique in construction.

1-Kerf Pavilion by MIT Architecture

What we liked about this specific case study was the functionality that resulted from kerfing the timber of the structure, which resulted in an aesthetic yet practical pavilion. The practicality of the pavilion was not an initial priority to us, but we did appreciate the way it was so subtly executed, and so we considered adding it to our list of objectives.

2-Bowoos Bionic Research Pavilion by Architecture students from Saarland University in Germany

There is something fascinating about seeing modular, organic patterns forming the pavilion's structure. It connects both the natural origin of timber, with the almost robotic sense of repetition of the modular elements, which aligned with our own vision of our timber pavilion.
